Damnit. Just as the modern music scene had gotten comfortable with its experiment side, maybe even a tad predictable in it's unpredictability, there has to be "that one band" that evolves into into an entity beyond the grasp of even the best musical beasts. Anyone remotely familiar with Deathspell Omega already understands the sheer brilliance of their sound, taking the black metal aesthetic and creating something wholly new and progressive - 2005's 'Kenose' shining the brightest among its peers - but no one could foresee the staggering heights that this French horde would reach with their latest full-length. 'Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum' is perfect - simple as that. Though distinctively and undeniably black metal, the incorporation of countless other elements creates a sound that is as technical and ambient as it is primitive and demonic, something entirely unique - leaving even a jaded, opinionated recovering music snob such as myself utterly speachless. The album against which all future black metal albums will be judged.
