When I heard the song "Icky Thump" on the radio I was not a huge fan! In fact, I had no inclination about buying the album. On a quick trip into Newbury comics to pick up some new shades, I heard a few songs of the CD. I liked what I heard. I brought it home, cranked up the stereo (the only way to listen to music) and enjoyed what some have related to as the sound of Led Zeppelin. Actually, that night I actually confused an obscure Zeppelin song on my itunes for a song off of "Icky Thump". It is this classic rock sound that makes the album intriguing.
I soon learned that "Icky Thump" is really the worst song on the album. After the lead off track the album is a rich mix of music styles. Mixed in with their classic driving bass beats are some bluesy songs such as "300 MPH Torrential Outpour Blues" and "Catch Hell Blues". These are the songs that really reek like Led Zeppelin. In the middle of the album "Prickly Thorn", "Sweet But Worn and St Andrew (This Battle Is in The Air)" is where they break down into a rock Irish jig. It is Dropkick Murphy's only toned back a bit and with some more musical creativity.
Finally the two songs that sold me on the album were "Rag and Bone", and "I'm Slowly Turning Into You". These songs have catchy riffs and a driving beat that left me pumped up and ready to go play some hockey!
Above is just a sample of what you have to look forward to when spinning "Icky Thump". So check out this album, even if you didnt like their previous work. And I advise you blast it as loud as your speakers will allow get get the full on effect!
